10 Factors to Help You Decide Where to Live in Newcastle

Mortgage Advice for For First-Time Buyers

Are thinking about moving, but not sure how to decide where to live? Don’t worry! We’ve pulled together a list of the top 10 things to consider, which should mean you make the right decision.

10 Factors to Help You Decide Where to Live

1. Urban vs Rural

This one is heavily influenced by what kind of lifestyle you prefer. Do you enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city? Or do you prefer strolling in the countryside?

This really is down to personal preference, so you need to decide which is right for you.

2. Transport links

If you’re commuting to and from a specific place of work, transport links will be something you need to suss out.  Especially if you’re reliant on public transport.

Think about… where is the nearest public transport interchange? Is there motorway access nearby? How long will your commute take?

If you’re after a set lifestyle, this will play heavily into your work-life balance.

3. Schools

If you have kids or plan to in the future, then being within the catchment zone of a great school, or a choice of schools is something you might want to bump up your priority list. The best place to find this information is on local authority websites or school league tables.

4. Amenities

When looking at the amenities in the area, you need to prioritise because it’s not a given that you’ll get everything.

Maybe you want a park for the kids? A gym on your route home? A bank within walking distance?

Whatever it is that is important to you, make sure you find out where these things are in relation to the properties you are considering. A lot of this information is available through Google Maps, but if something isn’t showing up, speak to the Estate Agent.

5. Friends and family

They might be held close to your heart, but how close do actually you want to be to them?

Some people love being close to friends and family so that they can help each other out and pop by whenever they want. Others prefer their own space and want to keep them at arm’s length. Either way, it’s worth roughly mapping this out.

6. Value for money

Prices of similar or equivalent houses vary depending on location. If you’re looking to get the most for your money, then it could be worth looking somewhere that’s a little cheaper. But this might mean a compromise on some of the other factors you’ve decided on above.

7. Community

If you want to live in an idyllic, close-knit community, spend some time researching different locations. You’ll likely find all the information you need through a local Facebook group. But if you want to be a bit more thorough, you could visit the place a couple of times to try and get a feel for the place.

8. Jobs

If you’re moving because of your job, you won’t have to worry too much about this. But if you’re going to be job hunting once you get there, do some basic research beforehand. Look into the locations of business parks or where the big employers in your industry are located. This will help you hit the ground running when you arrive.

9. Property type

If you don’t know whether you’d prefer an end terrace with a nice garden, or a modern, urban apartment, spend time looking into different options and try work out which styles you could see yourself living in.

10. Investment

If you’re planning to stay in your new home for a while, then it’s worth researching if there is any planned investment in the local area. If there is, make sure this is going to benefit you and not take away from any of the other previous factors.

Also, be aware that these developments might already be accounted for in the current valuation, so will you see the benefits in the long-term?

We hope this short, but the handy list has can help you to when you have to decide where to live.
